About this guide and how we research candidates

Volunteers research every contested race and measure directly: public filings, voting records, community group positions, and direct outreach to campaigns. We rate every entry, including when we land on No Recommendation, and we publish our reasoning for all of it.

Candidates and ballot measure committees were not given the opportunity to pay for preferential treatment and were not shown these recommendations before they were published.

City Council

District 2: Brett HaddoakRecommended

Brett Haddoak is the best choice in the Santa Clarita district 2 council race, rooted in the city’s need and set on solving its challenges. He’s a life-long resident who works as a software engineer. He spends time volunteering with Bridge for Homes, the primary homeless services provider in SCV.

We appreciate the depth and substance of his platform.

He supports building housing of different kinds to accommodate the population and wants to integrate public transit.

He supports building a new hospital to meet the demand in what is now LA County’s third largest city.

He supports removing Flock surveillance cameras.

His opponents are both Republican.

This is an easy one. Vote for Haddoak.

District 4: Valerie BradfordRecommended

In this five candidate race, Valerie Bradford is the best choice against incumbent Republican councilmember Laurene Weste. A nonprofit founder and a long-time community activist, she’s focused on compassionate effective responses to homelessness, protecting renters, creating affordable housing and good jobs. She’s the only Democrat in the race and is the only one backed by environmental and labor organizations.

District 5: Kelvin DriscollRecommended

This race in a diverse, renter-heavy part of Santa Clarita features a contest between Dr. Kelvin Driscoll, who’s been a leader in social service and child welfare work, versus Bob Khalsa, who’s a landlord. Driscoll has the endorsement of the Santa Clarita Democrats, Congressman George Whitesides, the LA County Federation of Labor, Sierra Club, and many more. Vote for Driscoll.
