About this guide and how we research candidates

Volunteers research every contested race and measure directly: public filings, voting records, community group positions, and direct outreach to campaigns. We rate every entry, including when we land on No Recommendation, and we publish our reasoning for all of it.

Candidates and ballot measure committees were not given the opportunity to pay for preferential treatment and were not shown these recommendations before they were published.

City Council (At-Large)

Mayra Alejandra AguiluzRecommended

Mayra Aguiluz has been a lifelong resident of Maywood, and she is a product of our local public schools in her city. Mayra graduated from Maywood Academy HS in 2011, she then went on to Cal State LA where she graduated with her Bachelor's degree in Psychology in 2016 and her Master's of Science degree in Rehabilitation Counseling in 2021. Mayra’s career goal is to continue to help the disenfranchised and underrepresented people from her community. Mayra Aguiluz was raised by a single immigrant mother from Guatemala who came to the US for the American dream and always emphasized the importance of obtaining an education. Her mother taught her essential values of being a human such as being empathetic, compassionate, optimistic and most importantly help out those who are in need.

Mayra Aguiluz has dedicated her professional career to working with and assisting others. For 5 years, she worked with youth to encourage and assist them with attaining a higher education and applying for financial aid/scholarships. She currently works with coordinating services for homeless individuals. Through her work, she provides homeless people with shelter, food, clothing, and connect them to the resources they need to get back on their feet. Mayra is truly passionate about serving underrepresented and marginalized individuals. As a recently licensed therapist, Mayra wishes to continue using her skills to help those in need.

In November 2022, Mayra was elected as Mayor Pro Tem for the City of Maywood to continue serving her community.

Mayra is endorsed by the CA Working Families Party and we recommend voting for her.
